SAN DIEGO - San Diego State Head Volleyball Coach Deitre Collins-Parker has announced the hiring of Makayla Westphal as the Volleyball Operations Assistant Operations for the Aztec program. Westphal arrives at SDSU after serving as an intern for the Director of Volleyball Operations at the University of Nebraska last season.

She replaces Julie Parker, who retired at the end of SDSU's 2016 season after six seasons with the Aztecs.

During the past two years, Westphal has coached at the Volleyball Club Nebraska (VCN) girls' club in Lincoln, Neb., where she was an assistant for the 15 and 17 Black teams and head coach for the 14 Black squad. She also served as an evaluator for the girls' National Junior and High Performance Team tryouts conducted by USA Volleyball in Omaha.

In addition to her club coaching experience at VCN, Westphal has served as a volunteer assistant coach at Waverly High School in Waverly, Neb., and as an assistant coach for the 18-1 team at the Panhandle Power Girls' Volleyball Club in Lincoln. In addition, she has also worked as an instructor at various volleyball camps in the Lincoln area.

As a player, Westphal was a four-year starter as an outside hitter/defensive specialist at Nebraska Wesleyan where she was a member of the AD31 All-Academic Team and was twice named a Pflieger-Olson Scholar-Athlete. She led the Prairie Wolves in service aces as a senior when the team finished with a 22-7 record.

The 24-year-old Westphal graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan in 2015 with a degree in physical education and a minor in psychology and coaching.
