San Diego State Hosts Fresno State in MW-Opening Weekend Series
The San Diego State softball team kicks off the Mountain West portion of its schedule this weekend with a home series with Fresno State.
The Aztecs (16-9), who have won a league-record seven regular-season MW titles, will play the Bulldogs (17-9) at 6 p.m. PT Friday, 4 p.m. PT Saturday and noon PT Sunday. The Friday and Sunday games will be broadcast live on the Mountain West Network.
SDSU has advanced to eight NCAA tournaments in the last nine years, nine of the past 11 and 11 of the past 16.
Of San Diego State's nine losses this year, four have come against the top 25 (1-4) and seven vs. teams that made the 2016 NCAA tournament (7-7).
The Aztecs are currently on pace to break school single-season records in average (.345), on-base percentage (.404) and slugging percentage (.489), and are ranked 11th in the country in average and 26th in runs per game (6.16).
Sophomore Molly Sturdivant (Santa Ana, Calif.) leads the team in average (.409), doubles (8), slugging percentage (.758), on-base percentage (.487) and walks (11, tied). SDSU also has three other hitters above .370, including senior Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) (.390, 2 HR, 27 RBI), junior Jenavee Peres (Garden Grove, Calif.) (.373, 7 HR, 29 RBI, 24 R), sophomore Katie Byrd (Santee, Calif./West Hills HS) (.373, 2 HR, 14 RBI, 20 R).
San Diego State's pitching staff has combined for a 3.18 ERA this year, led by freshman Marissa Moreno (Torrance, Calif.), who is 6-3 with a 2.70 ERA in 46 2/3 innings. Senior Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) (4-2, 2.92 ERA, 48.0 IP), sophomore Julie McDonald (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) (2-2, 3.43 ERA, 34.2 IP) and junior Alex Formby (Orange, Calif.) (4-2, 3.93 ERA, 35.2 IP) have also added to the staff.
