SAN DIEGO - San Diego State will make its annual trek across town this evening to face the University of San Diego at 6:00 p.m. at USD's Fowler Park.
The Aztecs have a record of 72-56-3 against San Diego in a series that began in 1962. The series has been fairly even over the past several years. Last season the Toreros won two of three games between the teams after the Aztecs had won both contests against USD in 2015. Since 2010, SDSU and USD are 8-8 against each other.
The Toreros (10-3) are coming off a four-game sweep of Tulane in New Orleans last weekend and are just outside the Collegiate Baseball top 25 this week.
USD is led offensively by designated hitter Jay Schuyler (.356, 6 2B, 8 RBI), first baseman Roman Garcia (.325, 6 2B, 4 HR, 8 RBI) and right fielder Hunter Mercado-Hood (.314, 5 2B, 7 RBI).
San Diego is expected to start either RHP Louis Crow (1-0, 4.85) or LHP Miles Sandum (1-1, 5.73).
San Diego State,meanwhile, has a record of 10-6 overall and 2-1 in Mountain West play after opening its conference season by winning two of three from Nevada this past weekend in Reno.
In four games last week, outfielder Tyler Adkison hit .538 (7-for-13) with six RBI and three runs scored. In Saturday's game vs. Nevada in Reno, he went 4-for-4 with a double, two home runs and five RBI. Adkison has taken over the team batting lead with a .440 average.
Second baseman Alan Trejo in currently on a seven-game hitting 11-for-31 streak during which he has gone 11-for-31 (.355) with two doubles, a home run, five RBI and six runs scored. His home run came in Sunday's series finale at Nevada.
Senior Andrew Martinez continues to impress in the role of designated hitter. He has hit safely in seven of the last eight game after having a six-game hitting streak end on Saturday (Mar. 11) at Nevada. Through 13 games, Martinez is hitting .345 with three doubles (second-highest average on the squad), two home runs and eight RBI. He has also drawn five walks for a .410 on-base percentage.
Following this evening's contest, San Diego State will prepare to resume league play when it hosts UNLV for a three-game series this weekend. The first contest of that set is scheduled for Friday, March 17, at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
