RENO, Nev. - San Diego State fell behind early and was unable to come back all the way as it dropped a 7-3 decision at Nevada Sunday afternoon at Peccole Park in Reno. The scenario was almost the exact opposite of the first two contests in the series when the Aztecs grabbed an early lead and went on to the victory.
On Sunday, the Wolf Pack jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning as it got to SDSU starter Hayden Petrovick, scoring on three hits and a pair of walks. Those three markers would make the Aztec freshman the losing pitcher in the contest as his record fell to 2-1 on the year.
San Diego State answered with a run in the top of the third when Danny Sheehan's two-out double to left scored Chase Calabuig, who had opened the frame with a two-bagger down the left field line.
Nevada countered with a run in the bottom of the same inning to restore its three-run advantage and make the score 4-1.
The Aztecs drew to within a run by scoring once in both the fourth and seventh innings.
In the fourth, Calabuig's RBI single scored Tyler Adkison from third. Then in the top of the seventh, Alan Trejo connected for his second home run of the year over the left field fence to make it a 4-3 contest.
But that's as close as the Aztecs would come the rest of the way as Nevada rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh for the final 7-3 score line. Those three runs, two of which were earned, came on two hits including a double, two walks and an Aztec error.
For SDSU, Tyler Adkison continued his hot hand at the plate with a pair of hits and a run scored. Sheehan (RBI) and Calabuig (RBI, run scored) also ended the day with two hits apiece.
The Aztecs will now return home to prepare for a contest against the University of San Diego on Tuesday, March 14, at 6:00 p.m. at USD's Fowler Park.
