RENO, Nev. - For the second day in a row, San Diego State jumped out to an early lead, built on its advantage and defeated Nevada, 7-3, Saturday afternoon at Peccole Park in Reno. With the win the Aztecs improved to 10-5 overall and 2-0 in Mountain West play.
As it did on Friday, SDSU opened the game by scoring in its first at bat. Back to back doubles by Alan Trejo and Andrew Brown plated the first run with a second coming home on Danny Sheehan's sacrifice fly to right.
The Aztecs doubled their lead to 4-0 in the top of the fourth. Jordan Verdon led off with a single before David Hensley reach on a fielding error by the Wolf Pack third baseman. Tyler Adkison then laced a two-run double to right center to score both runners.
It was the first of four hits on the day for Adkison that included a two-run homer in the sixth and a solo shot in the eighth. His five RBI on the day doubled his season total.
On the mound, senior left-hander Dominic Purpura neutralized the Nevada (3-10, 1-4 MW) offense over his 6.1 innings of work. He left the contest with the bases loaded and was charged with the two runs the Wolf Pack scored in the seventh. Purpura surrendered nine hits on the day, but was aided by three double play balls. He would pick up the win to improve to 3-0.
Relievers Logan Boyer and Harrison Pyatt would close out the game on the mound for SDSU with the Wolf Pack getting a consolation run in the ninth on a solo home run.
In addition to Adkison, Brown also enjoyed a multiple-hit contest with two singles, a double, RBI and run scored.
San Diego State will look to complete a sweep of the weekend series with Nevada when the teams meet on Sunday, March 12, at noon PT at Peccole Park.
