San Diego State track and field opened the Mountain West Championships, hosted by New Mexico, by running the program's fifth-best time in the distance medley relay on Thursday.

With junior transfer Cindy Flores running the 1,200-meter leg, Lakin Hatcher (400), Monique McPherson (800) and anchor Elaine Ribeiro (1,600) combined to run the relay in 12:19.90 for the fifth-fastest mark in school history. SDSU's 12:19.90 time on Thursday was good for seventh, and garnered two points for the Scarlet and Black.

This is the second time in as many seasons a San Diego State quartet has cracked the program's top five in the event. Ribeiro, Ellison Grove, Lisa-Anne Barrow and Rachel Roesgen ran the event in 12:06.14 on Jan. 29, 2016 for the No. 2 all-time spot.

With no Aztecs competing in the pentathlon, the majority of the events that occurred today, SDSU is in 10th place with two points from the Distance Medley Relay after the first day of events.

On Friday, San Diego State's day starts with the long jump at 1 p.m., followed by the pole vault at 2 p.m. The qualifying rounds of the 60 hurdles, 400, 60-meter dash, 800 and 200 are also on Friday, beginning with the 60-meter hurdles at 2:15 p.m. The 400 meters is slated for 2:45 p.m., and the 60-meter dash is on tap for 3:15 p.m. The 800 will take place at 3:45 p.m., and the Aztecs' day closes with the 200 meters at 4:15 p.m.
