Aztec Softball Heads to Loaded Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic
The San Diego State softball team heads to the prestigious Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic this weekend in Cathedral City, Calif., in the Palm Springs area.
The Aztecs (4-4) are slated to play Oklahoma State (6 p.m. PT) and No. 1/1 Florida State (8:30 p.m. PT) on Friday, Stanford at 5:30 p.m. PT Saturday, and New Mexico State (9 a.m. PT) and No. 17/17 Utah (11:30 a.m. PT) on Sunday. All five games will available on FloSoftball with a paid subscription.
SDSU is coming off a 10-4 win over Siena on Tuesday.
This weekend's tough schedule is nothing new for San Diego State as three of its four losses have come against nationally ranked schools, including then No. 8/8 UCLA (now No. 6/4) and then No. 8/9 Washington (now No. 8/7).
The Aztecs are hitting .361 as a team, which ranks 15th in the nation. Sophomore Molly Sturdivant (Santa Ana, Calif.) leads the way with a .615 average, four RBIs and three doubles in four games, while four others - senior Frankie Orlando (Roseville, Calif.) (.533, 5 RBI, 3 2B), sophomore Katie Byrd (Santee, Calif./West Hills HS) (.522, 9 R, 7 RBI), junior Jenavee Peres (Garden Grove, Calif.) (.414, 8 RBI, 6 R) and redshirt freshman Kiera Wright (Riverside, Calif.) (.400, 6 R, 5 SB) are also hitting at least .400 in the young season.
Four players have logged innings in the circle for SDSU, led by sophomore Julie McDonald (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) (1-0, 2.37 ERA, 1 SV, 20.2 IP). Senior Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) is 2-1 with a 2.86 ERA and a save in 14 2/3 innings, while freshman Marissa Moreno (Torrance, Calif.) has pitched in each of the last two games (0-1, 3.50 ERA, 8.0 IP) after missing time early with a knee injury. Junior Alex Formby (Orange, Calif.) has also logged 10 2/3 innings, posting a 1-2 record with a 7.88 ERA.
