IRVINE, Calif. - San Diego State was unable to recover from a five-run deficit after four innings as it dropped a 7-5 decision to UC Irvine Tuesday night at Anteater Ballpark. With the loss, the Aztecs evened their early season ledger at 2-2 while the Anteaters improved to 2-1.

SDSU fell behind in the first inning on a solo home run by Keston Hiura, but rebounded with two runs in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead.

The Aztec rally started with a double by Alan Trejo and RBI single by Danny Sheehan. After advancing to second on a ground out, Sheehan scored on Jordan Verdon's single to right center.

UC Irvine, however, came back with three runs in both the bottom if the third and fourth frames to go up 7-2. Five of the Anteaters' runs were charged to SDSU starter Marcus Reyes, who would go 3.1 innings surrendering five hits with two walks and a strikeout. The senior lefty would suffer to loss to drop to 0-1.

The home side's other two runs were given up by senior Cody Thompson, who tossed the middle 2.2 innings allowing two hits, a hit batter and two strikeouts.

San Diego State closed the gap to three runs in the top of the sixth when it plated a pair of markers on a bases load walk to David Hensley and a sacrifice fly by Trejo.

The Aztecs final run came in the eighth on a two-out double by Dean Nevarez and RBI single to right by Hensley. But that's as close the SDSU would get as UCI closer Calvin Faucher went to final 1.1 innings to record his second save of the season.

Sheehan and Hensley ended the evening with two hits apiece. The former had an RBI and run scored while the latter drove in two.

San Diego State continues early season Wednesday evening (Feb. 23) when it visits No. 7/11 Cal State Fullerton for a contest scheduled to get underway at 5:00 p.m. at the Titan's Goodwin Field.
