SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State baseball team will get its 2017 season underway this afternoon when it squares off against Pacific at 2:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

The Tigers are coming off a season that saw them finish with a record of 22-30 overall and 12-15 in the West Coast Conference. UOP returns five position starters and seven pitchers from that squad.

Top returning offensive players include outfielder Danny Mayer, who hit .314 with 15 home runs a year ago, along with first baseman Nate Verlin (.301, 9 2B, 26 RBI).

Pacific is expected to start sophomore right-hander Shelby Lackey (1-2, 5-.1 in 2016) on the mound where he will be opposed by Aztec senior lefty Brett Seeburger (1-3, 5.81 in 2016).

SDSU returns seven starter from its 2016 team including the top three hitters in Justin Wylie (.305, 13 2B, 39 RBI), Alan Trejo (.305, 5 2B, 35 RBI) and Tyler Adkison (.301, 15 2B, 6 HR, 40 RBI).

The Aztecs veteran will be joined by a talented cast of newcomers headed up by outfielder Chad Bible, who led the state junior college ranks in home runs (15) and RBI (61) in 2016, and Andrew Martinez, a power-hitting transfer from UC Irvine who graduated from that school last year with a season of eligibility remaining.

San Diego State and Pacific will look to continue their three-game weekend series on Saturday (Feb. 18) with a contest scheduled to get underway at 6:00 p.m.
