PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. -- The San Diego State women's golf team finds itself in 13th place after shooting a 17-over-par 301 on Sunday during the opening round of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge at Palos Verdes Golf Club.

In a stacked field that features 11 schools ranked among the top 30 nationally, however, the Aztecs find themselves just nine shots out of fifth place heading into Monday's second round on the par-71, 6,017-yard track.

Individually, SDSU was led by Haleigh Krause (Eugene, Ore.), who carded a 3-over 74 to finish the day in a tie for 34th place along with seven other players. After notching a double-bogey on the first hole, the Aztec junior collected a team-high 12 pars while offsetting three additional bogeys with a pair of birdies, including a successful conversion on the par-4, 404-yard 13th, which ranked as the fourth-toughest hole on Sunday.

Fellow classmate Georgia Lacey (Del Mar, Calif.) remains two shots in back of Krause in a tie for 43rd after firing an opening-round 75. The Torrey Pines High alumna endured a rocky start with four consecutive bogeys on holes 3-6 before bookending her back nine with birdies at No. 10 and No. 18.

Elsewhere, senior Sirene Blair (South Jordan, Utah) and junior Mila Chaves (Asuncion, Paraguay) find themselves in a tie for 56th on the leaderboard after each shot a 76. Despite a birdie on the 16th green, Blair was plagued by a rash of six bogeys, including two on her finishing holes. Chaves made birdie at No. 16 as well, following a successful drain at No. 10, but seven bogeys, including four after the turn, sabotaged her day.

The Aztec delegation also included Fernanda Escauriza (Asuncion, Paraguay), who carded a 77 on Sunday in her first action since joining the squad at the semester break. The SDSU freshman was 1-under through five holes, highlighted by a birdie at the par-3 No. 4, which ranked as the third-most difficult holes of the opening round. However, Escauriza tumbled into a tie for 65th after notching seven bogeys on her final 13 greens.

UCLA (-4) opened up a five-stroke lead over USC (+1) in the team standings, while Duke (+3), Florida (+6) and UNLV (+8) round out the top five. Duke's Leona Maguire and Robynn Ree of USC share the No. 1 spot on the individual leaderboard after each carded a 68 on Sunday, while UCLA's Lilia Vu and Mariel Galdiano, Florida's Kelly Grassel and Tennessee's Emmie Pietila are all one shot behind in a tie for second.

The Northrop Grumman continues with second-round action on Monday when SDSU tees off alongside Washington and Northwestern, starting at 10:12 a.m. PT on hole No. 10.
