Three Aztecs advanced to the finals of the 1-meter springboard on the final day of the UCLA Diving Invitational Sunday afternoon at the Spieker Aquatics Center in Los Angeles.
For the third straight day junior Alexandra Caplan led the Aztecs, this time with a final placing of third. On Friday and Saturday she had finished third on the 3-meter board and eighth on the platform. Her score of 291.00 in the 1-meter prelims put her on the third spot, and she then turned in a mark of 293.70 in the finals for a total score of 584.70.
Freshman Marie Yacopino ended the finals round in ninth place with a total score of 502.65. She made a dramatic improvement in placing after she was 15th at the end of the prelims with a score of 237.05 for her six dives. In the final round, she turned in a mark of 265.60 to move up six place in the final standings.
The third SDSU diver to advance to the finals was Makena Chamoures, whose total score of 467.95 was good for 15th place. She moved up from the 17th spot at the end of the prelims when she scored 233.30.
Three other Aztecs competed on the 1-meter board, but were unable to advance to the final round. Nicole Dutton finished 25th in the prelims with a score of 217.00 while teammate Delaney Gallagher was 26th at 215.60. In addition, Payton Gabris had a score of 79.20 after two dives before being scratched from the competition.
Up next for the Aztec divers and swimmers is a trip across town to face the University of San Diego in a dual meet on Friday, Jan. 20, at 1:00 p.m. at USD's Sports Center Pool.
