SAN DIEGO, Calif. – San Diego State and Northwestern will square off for a doubleheader this afternoon as they continue their four-game series at Tony Gwynn Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. with the second game expected to get underway approximately 45 minutes after the conclusion of the opener.
The Wildcats (4-10), who come into the day on the heels of a six-game losing streak, are expected to send a pair of left-handers to the mound for today's contests. Junior Reed Mason (1-0, 1.98) will start the first game with fellow junior Cooper Wetherbee (0-1, 7.45) set for game two. Mason is a graduate of nearby Torrey Pines High School.
Northwestern right fielder Matt Hopfner continues to lead NU is hitting with a .396 batting average along with five doubles and six RBI. Third baseman Connor Lind is batting .314 with eight RBI.
San Diego State, meanwhile, will try to build on the momentum of Thursday night's 11-6 victory over the Wildcats that saw then turn in a season-high in runs as well as collecting 11 hits for the third time in the last four games.
SDSU will send a pair of first-year Aztecs to the mound to start today's doubleheader. The first game will see freshman Dominic Purpura (0-0, 1.29) get the call while the nightcap will have junior Adrian Orozco (0-0, 2.57) as SDSU's starter.
Freshman Dean Nevarez has assumed the role of the Aztecs' designated hitter and he has responded by hitting .393 with a double and four RBI in the eight contests in which he has appeared. Shortstop Alan Trejo, one of two "veteran" starters in the infield, is batting .357 with two doubles and eight RBI while fellow soph Justin Wylie is hitting at a .294 clip and leads the squad in RBI with 10.
Northwestern and San Diego State will wrap up their four-game series with a single game on Saturday, March 13, scheduled to get underway at 1:0 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
