SAN DIEGO - Donnel Pumphrey ran for 112 yards and Rashaad Penny added 108 yards on the ground to lead San Diego State to a 55-0 win over Hawai'i Saturday night at Qualcomm Stadium.
The win, coupled with a Nevada loss at New Mexico later in the night, wrapped up the West Division title for the Aztecs (8-1, 5-0 MW) and a trip to the MW Championship for the second straight season.
The 55-0 win was SDSU's largest margin of victory in a shutout in its Division I history (since 1969) and largest margin of victory overall since 1970 (second largest in its DI history). The 55 points, meanwhile, are San Diego State's most since scoring 56 against Hawai'i in 1996.
Pumphrey had 85 yards by the end of the first quarter and did not play in the fourth quarter for a third consecutive game. It was his eighth consecutive 100-yard game, tying his own personal-best streak and tied for the second longest in school history (Marshall Faulk, 10), and 30th of his career.
Penny, meanwhile, logged his 108 yards on just eight carries, averaging 13.5 yards per attempt. It was his third 100-yard game of his career, all over the past five games. Included in the 108 yards was a 73-yard touchdown, which tied a career long, in the third quarter.
It was the Aztecs' third consecutive game with multiple 100-yard rushers, fourth time in five games, seventh time in 19 games and 25th time in program history.
Juwan Washington added 48 yards on the ground on five attempts (9.6 avg.) and two overall touchdowns, a 24-yard pass from Christian Chapman in the third quarter and a 20-yard run in the fourth.
Chapman tied a career high with three touchdown passes, connecting on strikes of 13 yards to David Wells and nine yards to Quest Truxton in the first quarter, and the 24-yard pass to Washington in the third.
The SDSU defense also got into the mix with two interceptions returned for a touchdown, a 14-yard return by Ron Smith in the first quarter and a 54-yard runback by Damontae Kazee in the fourth. It was the first time San Diego State returned two interceptions back for scores in the same game since the 2015 opener against San Diego. Altogether, the Aztecs picked off the Rainbow Warriors (4-6, 3-3 MW) four times, their most since a five-interception game against USD in the same 2015 opener.
John Baron II added a pair of field goals in the second quarter, connecting on a 30 and 45-yarder. He also tried a career-long 51-yard attempt in the third quarter, but came up just short, snapping a streak of 10 straight makes.
Calvin Munson led SDSU in tackles for the sixth time of the season with eight stops, while Smith, making his first career start at cornerback, added a career-high seven tackles, in addition to the 14-yard interception return for a score.
The San Diego State defense finished with four interceptions, seven pass breakups, a forced fumble and two sacks.
The Aztecs finished with 14 points in the first quarter, 13 in the second, 14 in the third and 14 in the fourth.
SDSU outgained UH, 393-215, including a decisive 296-48 margin on the ground. San Diego State won its 30th straight game when rushing for at least 200 yards.
The Aztecs continued their best start (8-1) since 1977.
