MONTEREY PARK, Calif. - The San Diego State swim team finds itself in third place of 10 teams after the opening day of the A3 Performance Invitational being hosted by UC San Diego at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park, Calif.
The Aztecs scored 286 points in the opening five events at the three-day meet and trail second-place Hawai'i (296) by just 10 points heading into Friday's competition and they hold a 50-point lead on UC Santa Barbara which sits in fourth place with 236 points. UCLA holds the team lead after the first day of the meet after compiling 427.5 points.
San Diego State lone first-place finish during Thursday evening's final was turned in by McKenna Meyer in the 500 freestyle. The Aztec freshman recorded a winning time of 4:46.62, a mark that enters the SDSU all-time top 10 list as the third-fastest time in program history.
Fellow freshman Kassidy Henson captured third place in the B final in 4:56.04. Her time fell just outside of the SDSU top 10 in the event.
The Aztecs also had a pair of second place finishes in two other individual races on Thursday evening.
Alma Thormalm was runner-up in the 50 freestyle in 23.20 while Peyton Wilson was fourth in the same race at 23.39. In addition, Summer Harrison took fifth in the B final with a time of 23.64.
Berggren, meanwhile, placed second in the final of the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:00.21.
The other two events on opening day were a pair of relays with SDSU capturing fourth place in each.
In the 200 freestyle relay, the foursome of Thormalm, Wilson, Harrison and Allie Klinger went 1:32.72, the 10th-fastest time in Aztec history. The time enters the SDSU top 10 list as the 10th-best time ever by an Aztec team. In addition, Thormalm's leadoff leg of 23.18 for her 50 freestyle was the 10th-fatest time in that event in program history.
In the 400 medley relay it was the quartet of Kate Santilena, Morganne McKennan, Harrison and Thormalm that recorded a time of 3:41.99 to place fourth.
Action continues at the 2016 A3 Performance Invitational on Friday with prelims in the 400 IM, 200 fly, 200 free, 100 breast and 200 back starting at 9:00 a.m. (PT). The finals in those five events along with the 200 medley and 800 free relays will get underway at 5:00 p.m. (PT).
