LOS ANGELES - The San Diego State diving team concluded action at the USC Diving Invitational by sending three of its four athletes to the finals of the platform board Sunday afternoon at the Trojans' Uytengsu Aquatics Center in Los Angeles. SDSU's divers were three of the 12 finalists that emerged from the initial field of 24.
Junior Alexandra Caplan was the Aztecs' top finisher as she placed sixth with a total score of 450.65. Her mark of 225.25 put her in the seventh spot after the prelims and she added 225.30 in her five dives during the finals to end the afternoon sixth.
Fellow junior Payton Gabris was 10th at the end of the prelims with a score of 203.70. She then added 211.00 after her five dives in the finals to take 10th place overall with a total mark of 414.70.
San Diego State's other finalist was Nicole Dutton, who ended the day in 11th place with a total score of 339.30. Her mark of 156.55 in the finals allowed her to move up from her 12th-place standing after the prelims where she scored 182.75.
SDSU's fourth competitor, freshman Marie Yacopino, turned in a score of 166.10 in the prelims to end her day in 17th place. The performance marked her debut on the platform.
The San Diego State swimming and diving team will next be in action this coming weekend at two different meets that get underway on Friday.
The swimmers will be at the A3 Performance Invitational in Monterey Park, Calif., scheduled to run from Nov. 17-19. The divers, meanwhile, will compete at the NAU Diving Invitational hosted by Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, Ariz., Nov. 17-19.
