2016 Fall Classic II Day One Results
The San Diego State women's tennis finished the first day of the SDSU Fall Classic II, where they advanced four singles players and two doubles pairs in the championship bracket. The three-day tournament is being held at Aztec Tennis Center through Sunday, Nov. 13.
The Aztecs claimed two victories in doubles action, both in the black draw. Mia Smith and Alli Valk teamed up to defeat Alexis Thoma and Ivana Babic of the University of North Texas, 6-2, while Kennedy Davis and Paola Diaz dominated Cassidy Branstine and Jackie Tsodikova of UC Irvine, 6-0.
In the red bracket, Taylor Lederman and Marina Colvee could not get past Ana Bago and Livia Cirnu of Kansas State, falling 6-1. Olivia Larsson and Berta Acero were also unable to claim a win against Minying Liang and Laura Arciniegas of UNT, finishing the match at 6-4.
Singles play left three Aztecs with victories and one advancing from a bye. In the white bracket, Kennedy Davis downed KSU's Maria Panaite, 6-2, 6-2, but Mia Smith could not get past Ashlynn Hall of UCI, falling 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
In the gold draw, Alli Valk faced a tough matchup against UCI's Tsodikova, falling 7-5, 6-4. Paola Diaz received a bye in the bracket and will advance tomorrow to face UNT's Liang.
The Aztecs were successful in two of three matches in the silver draw, where Olivia Larsson claimed a victory after her opponent, Ivana Babic of UNT, retired during the match (4-6, 4-2, Ret.). Marina Colvee was also successful against Ariana Tilbury of UCI, finishing 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.
The tournament will continue tomorrow at the Aztec Tennis Center and begins with doubles play at 9 a.m., immediately followed by singles action.
