SAN DIEGO - San Diego State senior running back Donnel Pumphrey (Las Vegas) has been named a Maxwell Award semifinalist and Calvin Munson (St. Charles, Mo.) a Lott IMPACT Trophy Award quarterfinalist, the two organizations recently announced.
Pumphrey is one of 18 semifinalists for the Maxwell Award, which goes out to the College Player of the Year. He's the only player from a Group of 5 school on the list and one of five running backs.
Pumphrey, who last month was named a midseason All-American by USA Today, Sports Illustrated, ESPN, Sporting News, CBS Sports and Fox Sports, leads the nation in rushing yards (1,469), rushing yards per game (183.6) and all-purpose yards per game (202.5), and is tied for third in rushing touchdowns (13), fourth in rushing yards per carry (6.59, min. 130 att.) and tied for fourth in overall touchdowns (13). His 183.6 rushing yards per game average currently rank 10th in NCAA FBS single-season history and are more than 76 other teams in FBS this year. Pumphrey, who also has a team-high 20 catches for 145 yards (7.2 avg.), has four games this year with at least 220 yards, including 281 vs. California (sixth nationally), 223 at Utah State (19th nationally) and 220 at Northern Illinois and at Fresno State (24th nationally). No other player in FBS play has more than one.
The three finalists for the award will be released Nov. 22 with the final announcement set for Dec. 8 at The Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN. The award is voted on by Division I FBS head coaches, members of the Maxwell Football Club, FBS sports information directors, as well as sportswriters and sportscasters across the country.
Munson, meanwhile, is one of 19 quarterfinalists for the Lott IMPACT Trophy, which honors the best collegiate defensive players who make the biggest IMPACT - integrity, maturity, performance, academics, community and tenacity - on their team on and off the field. He's one of three players from a non-Power 5 Conference on the list.
Munson has a team-high 66 tackles (35 solo) and leads a team that ranks second in the country in rush defense (90.75), fifth in total defense (280.50), 10th in scoring defense (17.0) and 20th in pass defense (189.75). Munson, who's 66 tackles are 32 more than the next player, also has a team-best-tying 11 quarterback hurries, to go along with 6.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and three pass breakups.
The semifinalist for the Lott IMPACT Trophy will be released Nov. 9 with four finalists announced Nov. 30. The winner will be announced at the Lott IMPACT Trophy Awards Banquet, which will take place Dec. 11 in Newport Beach, Calif.
Winners of four consecutive games, 15 straight against conference opponents and 17 of its last 18 contests, San Diego State (7-1, 4-0 MW) plays host to Hawai`i (4-5, 3-2 MW) at 4 p.m. PT Saturday. Tickets can be purchased through GoAztecs.com, over the phone by calling (619) 283-7378, or by visiting Qualcomm Stadium's Window E between 9 a.m. PT and 5 p.m. PT.
