FRESNO, Calif. - The San Diego State swimming and diving team ended action at the 2016 Chick-fil-A Invitational in Fresno on Saturday as it finished in second place among the six teams competing.
The Aztecs' two-day point total of 825.50 was second only to Boise State (1,002) in the meet that featured five members of the Mountain West. Nevada finished the Invitational in third place with 664 points.
Host Fresno State ended the competition in fourth with 517.50 points while San Jose State was fifth at 465. Cal State Bakersfield rounded out the field in sixth place with a score of 281.
San Diego State's lone individual winner on Saturday was junior Frida Berggren, who captured first in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:03.40. The victory capped a fine weekend for Berggren, who won the 200 individual medley and placed second in the 400 individual medley on Friday.
The Aztecs took second place in four other individual events as well as both relays on Saturday.
Freshman Morganne McKennan was runner-up in the 200 breaststroke with a mark of 2:18.95. Her time enters the SDSU record book as the ninth-fastest ever in the event.
Fellow frosh McKenna Meyer placed second in 1650 freestyle in 17:00.56. That mark also goes into the school record list as the 10th-best ever for an SDSU swimmer at that distance.
The Aztecs' other second-place finish in an individual race was turned in by Alma Thormalm, who was runner-up in the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.51.
San Diego State's relay results included second-place efforts in both the 400 medley and 400 freestyle events.
In the 400 medley, the quartet of Kate Santilena, McKennan, Summer Harrison and Peyton Wilson went 3:49.63.
The 400 freestyle relay saw the SDSU foursome of Meyer, Thormalm, Wilson and Cailey Steffens come in second with a time of 3:27.46.
The San Diego State swimmers and divers will now prepare for their first home meet of the 2016-17 season as they as set to host Vanderbilt and UC San Diego on Friday. Oct. 14, at 2:00 p.m.at the Aztec Aquaplex.
