SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego State men's tennis team will compete on its home courts for the first time this season when it plays host to the annual Aztec Fall Invitational, Oct. 7-9, at Aztec Tennis Center.
The three-day tournament is set to get underway on Friday at 9 a.m. PT and will feature two flights in both singles and doubles competition. Bracket play will run through the weekend, with champions scheduled to be crowned on Sunday. Admission is free to the public.
In addition to SDSU, the field includes players from the University of San Diego, UC San Diego, UC Irvine, USC, Pepperdine, Grand Canyon and Florida Gulf Coast.
Four Aztecs are schedule to participate, including sophomore Raul de la Torre (Calexico, Calif.), along with freshmen Joel Popov (Tampere, Finland), David Hough (Traralgon, Victoria, Australia) and Nicholas Mitchell (Ojai, Calif.), who will be seeing his first action in a Scarlet and Black uniform.
Popov is coming off a fourth-place finish in singles play at the season-opening Wildcat Invitational last month in Tucson, Ariz., where he competed with Hough and de la Torre.
In his first season on Montezuma Mesa in 2015-16, de la Torre racked up a 4-4 record in singles play, including a 2-1 mark against Mountain West foes in the No. 6 position.
Following this weekend's tournament, SDSU will continue its fall slate at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championships, Oct. 20-24, in Malibu, Calif.
