FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - San Diego State senior tight end Daniel Brunskill (Valley Center, Calif.) has been named a Burlsworth Trophy nominee, the Springdale Rotary Club announced today. Brunskill is one of 52 student-athletes on the list, one of four offensive linemen and one of six from the Mountain West.
The Burlsworth Trophy is given to the most outstanding collegiate football player who began his career as a walk-on and has shown outstanding performance on the field. Nominees must have started their first season of participation with a Division I football program without financial aid of any kind from their athletic department. The trophy is named in honor of former Arkansas walk-on and All-American offensive lineman Brandon Burlsworth.
Brunskill, who was given a scholarship prior to the 2015 spring semester, has started all eight games so far this year at right tackle after earning honorable-mention all-Mountain West honors last season as a tight end. Brunskill has helped block for a team that has rushed for 2,169 yards and 271.1 yards per game (ninth most in the country) on the season. SDSU is also ranked 11th in time of possession (33:52), 19th in red zone offense (.917) and 32nd in pass efficiency (146.35).
Brunskill, who has played in 48 consecutive games, tied for the longest streak on the team, is also on the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List, which goes out to the athlete who does the most community service, among other attributes. Over his career, he has caught 15 passes for 143 yards (9.5 avg.) and three touchdowns.
Previous Aztec nominees include Dakota Gordon (2015), Joel Alesi (2014) and Chad Young (2013).
The 2015 winner was Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield.
The Springdale Rotary Club will host an awards ceremony on Dec. 5 in Springdale, Ark., to honor the three finalists and announce the 2016 winner.
Winners of four consecutive games, 15 straight against conference opponents and 17 of its last 18 contests, San Diego State (7-1, 4-0 MW) plays host to Hawai`i (4-5, 3-2 MW) at 4 p.m. PT Saturday. Tickets can be purchased through GoAztecs.com, over the phone by calling (619) 283-7378, or by visiting Qualcomm Stadium's Window E between 9 a.m. PT and 5 p.m. PT.
