SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State rowing team is set to compete in the Row for the Cure regatta to kick off its 16-17 season. The event will be held at North Ski Beach on Mission Bay and will raise money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

The first event of the day will be the open eight, set to start at 7:40 am. The novice eight will follow at 8 a.m. and the open four begins at 9 a.m. The ideal location for spectators to watch the race is from Vacation Island between the two Ingraham Street bridges on Mission Bay.

The Row for the Cure, which was established in 2002, raises money from entry fees, donations and raffle tickets with all proceeds going directly to the Komen for the Cure and the fight against breast cancer. Of the funds raised, 75 percent are directed toward the San Diego community to support uninsured and underinsured women with breast cancer diagnosis, treatment and services. The remaining 25 percent goes directly to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Award and Research Grant Programs.

The Aztecs will face crews from University of San Diego, Orange Coast College and host, UCSD. San Diego State will have nine boats entered in Sunday's regatta, comprised of three open eight boats, two novice eight boats and three open four boats. Final race results will be posted on GoAztecs.com.

At last year's regatta, SDSU had eight entrants over the span of the three events- three in the open eight race, two in the novice eight, and three in the open four. The Aztecs saw great results as all three of the open eight boats placed in the top half of the field, finishing in second, third, and fifth respectively. The novice eight entrants finished in the first and second spot while the open four racers fell into the middle of the pack at fourth, seventh, and eighth place.
