BOULDER CITY, Nev. -- The San Diego State women's golf team sits in a tie for third place after shooting a collective 8-under-par 280 on Sunday during the opening round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown at Boulder Creek Golf Club. With their total, the Aztecs remain seven strokes off the pace with host UNLV heading into Monday's second round on the par-72, 6,301-yard course layout.

Baylor fired a 15-under 273 to grab a five-shot lead over second-place Idaho (-10), while San José State (-9) is fifth behind the Aztecs and Rebels, followed by Indiana (-5), UC Riverside (-4), Texas (-4), Vanderbilt (-3) and Missouri (+1).

Individually, SDSU was led by Mila Chaves (Asuncion, Paraguay), who shot a season-best 4-under-par 68 on Sunday, highlighted by five birdies, including a successful drain on her final green, the par-3, 169-yard No. 4, which ranked as the third-toughest hole of round one. With her score, the Aztec junior finds herself in a six-way logjam for fifth, one shot in back of Idaho's Clara Moyano and Alexandra Farnsworth of Vanderbilt, who are both tied for third at 5-under, while UC Riverside's Hannah Facchini and Baylor's Marisa Vesga share the lead after 18 holes at 6-under.

In addition, junior Georgia Lacey (Del Mar, Calif.) landed in a tie for 15th after carding a 2-under 70. The Torrey Pines High alumna countered a pair of bogeys with four birdies, including consecutive conversions on holes 16-17.

Elsewhere, senior Natalie Vivaldi (Oceanside, Calif.) and junior Haleigh Krause (Eugene, Ore.) finished the day in a tie for 26th after each shot a 1-under 71.

Vivaldi got off to a slow start with back-to-back bogeys on holes 5-6, but played spot free golf the rest of the way, notching 12 pars and three birdies, including an impressive make on her finishing hole, the par-4, 353-yard No. 3. Krause, meanwhile, offset a bogey at No. 10 with a team-high 15 pars to go along with consecutive birdies on the 12th and 13th greens.

Rounding out the Aztec starting rotation was Sirene Blair (South Jordan, Utah), who sits in a massive tie for 71st along with 16 other players after logging a 75. The SDSU senior was cruising on her front nine with six pars and three bogeys, but quickly lost steam with two bogeys sandwiched around a double on her first three greens after the turn. Despite the tumble, Blair remains just five shots out of the top 15 with 36 holes left to play.

The Aztecs' were also represented by Kitty Tam (Hong Kong, China), an individual competitor who matched Blair with a 75 on Sunday. The SDSU sophomore was even through 15 holes after countering two bogeys and a double bogey with four birdies. However, an additional bogey and double on her final three holes prevented a higher standing.

The Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown continues with second-round action on Monday when SDSU tees off alongside Baylor and Idaho in a shotgun start at 8 a.m. PT.
