MALIBU, Calif. -- San Diego State men's tennis senior Milen Ianakiev (Elz, Hesse, Germany) and freshman David Hough (Traralgorn, Victoria, Australia) came up short in their respective consolation semifinal singles matches on Sunday at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships presented by Oracle at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center on the campus of Pepperdine University.
Ianakiev fell in straight sets to Ben Donovan of Cal Poly, 6-2, 6-1, while Hough engaged Grand Canyon's Francois Musitelli in a tighter battle before experiencing the same fate in a 6-0, 7-5 setback. Later in the day, Donovan captured the consolation singles title with a comeback victory in a super tiebreaker over Musitelli, 3-6, 7-6(2), 10-4.
SDSU will have nearly three months off from competition before traveling to the Aloha State for its dual-match opener at Hawai'i on Jan. 14, 2017. The Aztecs will remain in Honolulu to face UC Santa Barbara in a neutral-site encounter on Jan. 15, before returning to Aztec Tennis Center for a clash with Mississippi State on Jan. 22.
