MALIBU, Calif. -- The San Diego State men's tennis team had three players compete on Saturday at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships presented by Oracle on the campus of Pepperdine University.
Milen Ianakiev (Elz, Hesse, Germany) and David Hough (Traralgorn, Victoria, Australia) advanced to the semifinals of the singles consolation bracket, while sophomore Sander Gjoels-Andersen (Klampenborg, Denmark) was eliminated in the main draw quarterfinals after picking up a victory at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
Ianakiev opened the day with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Grand Canyon's Philip Kuehnen in the consolation round of 16 before knocking off Garrett Auproux of Cal Poly, 6-3, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. With his results, the Aztec senior will square off against another Cal Poly opponent Ben Donovan in the semifinals on Sunday.
Similarly, Hough posted two consolation victories of his own on Saturday, dispatching UCLA's Reid Shumway after a tough opening set, 7-6(1), 6-3, to along with a 7-5, 6-1 conquest of Cal Poly's Daniel Cardiff. The SDSU freshman will next meet Frank Musitelli of Grand Canyonin the other semifinal match.
Over in the main draw, Gjoels-Andersen opened with a 6-4, 6-4 defeat of UCLA's Daniel Gealer in the round of 16, but was unable to duplicate the feat against another Bruin adversary, falling to 38th-ranked Gage Brymer, 6-2, 6-1.
The ITA Southwest Regional Championships resume on Sunday with the consolation matches starting at 11:15 a.m. PT.
