SAN DIEGO -- Donnel Pumphrey ran for 135 yards and two touchdowns and Rashaad Penny ran for 105 yards and three scores to lead San Diego State to a 42-3 win over San Jose State to become bowl eligible for a seventh straight season Friday night at Qualcomm Stadium.
The Aztecs (6-1, 3-0 MW) outgained the Spartans (2-6, 1-3 MW), 460-209, and continued their best start since 1977.
The 39-point margin of victory was SDSU's best since a 47-0 win against Nicholls in 2010 and was the largest in a conference game since a 56-8 victory over Hawai'i in 1996.
San Diego State scored its first three touchdowns - a 4-yard pass from Christian Chapman to David Wells, a 3-yard run by Penny and a 27-yard run by Pumphrey - before SJSU got on the scoreboard with a 26-yard field goal late in the first half, closing the gap at 21-3.
The Aztecs then scored on three straight drives in the third quarter, beginning with a 4-yard run by Penny, followed by a 23-yard scamper by Pumphrey and ending with a career-long 73-yard dash by Penny.
San Jose State got 105 of its 209 yards over its final two drives in the fourth quarter, but failed on a fourth-and-goal from the 5 and a fourth-and-six from the 35 to close out the game.
Pumphrey's two touchdowns broke two more of Marshall Faulk's career records, including rushing (58) and overall (63). Both numbers rank in a tie for 11th in NCAA FBS history. He also finished with his sixth straight 100-yard game and 28th of his career. Pumphrey added two catches for 14 yards.
Penny, meanwhile, ran for his 105 yards on just nine attempts (11.7 avg.), thanks mainly on the 73-yarder. His three rushing touchdowns (and overall scores) were both career highs as he earned his second 100-yard game in three contests. Penny added two catches for 64 yards.
SDSU had two 100-yard rushers in the same game for the fifth time in the last 17 contests and 23rd time in program history.
Quarterback Christian Chapman added 31 yards on the ground as San Diego State ran for 293 yards and five touchdowns, winning its 28th consecutive game when rushing for at least 200 yards.
Chapman also threw for 167 yards and a touchdown, going 13 for 18.
David Wells posted career highs of five receptions and 62 yards, all in the first two drives, including a 4-yard touchdown catch from Chapman. Both the five catches and 62 yards were the Aztecs' most by a tight end since Gavin Escobar in 2012.
Starting for the first time of his career, Kalan Montgomery had a career-high seven tackles to lead SDSU while Austin Wyatt-Thayer had a career-best two sacks.
The San Diego State defense held its third straight opponent to single digits for the first time since a four-game stretch from Oct. 15-Nov. 5, 1977.
Additionally, the Aztecs held the Spartans to 209 yards and extended their MW streak to three games without allowing a touchdown (six points on two field goals).
SDSU extended numerous streaks, including consecutive wins against conference opponents (14), home wins vs. league foes (13), victories in the Pacific Time Zone (12) and wins a home (9).
