SAN JOSE, Calif. - San Diego State women's soccer couldn't crack a staunch San Jose State backline and fell to the Spartans in Mountain West play, 4-0, on Sunday.
San Diego State falls to 2-1-1 in Mountain West action (4-6-1 overall), while San Jose State improves to 3-1-0 against conference foes (6-3-3 overall).
The Aztecs looked prime to get on the board first. Just 1:36 into the match, Rachel Speros took a shot that careened off the crossbar. Aliyah Utush was able to collect the ball and put it on goal, forcing a save from Spartan goalkeeper Ana Calero.
In the fifth minute, San Jose State broke through. Dariell Franklin fed a low pass to Maricruz Chapa, who right-footed in the shot for her second tally of the season.
At the nine-minute mark, Milan Moses attempted to knot the score. After beating her defender in Spartan territory, she took a low left-footed shot that forced Calero to dive and make the stop.
The Spartans, however, doubled their lead at 14:27. Yaritza Arista served up a pass to Alexis Venegas from 18 yards out, sending the ball sailing over Gabby English's head for the 2-0 tally.
San Jose State would put two more on the board in the second half for the final 4-0 score.
The Spartans out-shot the Aztecs, 9-8, putting five shots on goal to San Diego State's four shots on goal. SJSU was awarded three corner kicks to the Aztecs' one corner kick.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Gabby English (4-6-1, 2-1-1 MW) made one save, while Calero (3-1-0, 1-1-0 MW) turned aside four shots for the clean sheet.
The Scarlet and Black is back on action on Fri., Oct. 7, when it visits UNLV for a 7 p.m. match.
