SAN DIEGO - Two San Diego State student-athletes have been named San Diego Stars for the month of September, the San Diego Hall of Champions announced last week. Senior Donnel Pumphrey (football) and senior Travis Nicklaw (men's soccer) were recognized for their outstanding play and team contributions.

Pumphrey led the Aztecs to their first 3-0 start since 2011 and second in the last 35 seasons with wins over New Hampshire, California and Northern Illinois. During the game against Cal, Pumphrey rushed for 281 yards, breaking Marshall Faulk's school rushing record (4,589). He led the nation with 599 rushing yards and 666 all-purpose yards. Pumphrey also garnered two Mountain West Player of the Week honors.

Nicklaw scored the only goal, a penalty kick, against No. 1 Akron. Nicklaw is also recognized for his golden goal in the fifth minute of overtime against crosstown rival, USD. With his two game-winning goals last month, Nicklaw elevated the Aztecs into national rankings.

The stars are picked from a list of nominees sent in by various San Diego-area sport organizations.

The men's soccer team will duke it out against Stanford on Thursday and Cal on Sunday while Aztec football returns this Friday against San Jose State.

Football tickets are still available and can be purchased through GoAztecs.com, over the phone by calling (619) 283-7378, or by visiting Qualcomm Stadium's Window E between 9 a.m. PT and 5 p.m. PT.
