WOLCOTT, Colo. ââ'¬" The San Diego State women's golf team finds itself in a familiar perch atop the standings at the Golfweek Conference Challenge after shooting a collective 1-under-par 287 during the opening round Monday at Red Sky Golf Club.

With four players among the individual top 20, the defending tournament champion Aztecs forged a four-stroke advantage over second-place Pepperdine (+3), while Tennessee (+5) remains six shots behind in third heading to Tuesday's second round at the par-72, 6,261-yard Tom Fazio Course.

SDSU was paced by Mila Chaves (Asunción, Paraguay), who fired a 2-under 70 to finish the day in a tie for second, along with Coastal Carolina's Malene Kroboll Hansen. In her fall debut, the Aztec junior offset two bogeys with four birdies, including a successful drain on the par-5, 505-yard No. 18. With her total, Chaves finds herself just two strokes in back of Pepperdine's front-runner Tatiana Wijaya, who carded a 68.

Sirene Blair (South Jordan, Utah) also remains in contention three shots off the pace after ending round one in a tie for fourth with another Pepperdine player Katherine Zhu and Sophie Hausmann of Idaho at 1-under 71. After recording a bogey at No. 6, the SDSU senior and three-time all-Mountain West performer ¬made par on 10 of her next 11 holes before completing the day with a birdie on the 18th green.

Elsewhere, Natalie Vivaldi (Oceanside, Calif.) sits one shot in back of Blair in a tie for seventh on the crowded leaderboard after shooting an even-par 72. The Aztec senior transfer countered three bogeys with a trio of birdies, including an impressive conversion on the par-4, 340-yard No. 12, which ranked as the fifth-most difficult hole on Monday.

Meanwhile, junior Georgia Lacey (Del Mar, Calif.) occupies the 19th position after carding an opening-round 74. The Torrey Pines High alumna sank a team-high five birdies, featuring a successful make on the par-4, 355-yard No. 11, which ranked as the second-toughest hole of the day. Lacey added eight pars as well; however, four bogeys and a triple stymied her advance.

Rounding out the SDSU contingent was fellow classmate Haleigh Krause (Eugene, Ore.), who landed in a tie for 29th after firing a 75 in round one.

San Diego State will tee off alongside Pepperdine and Tennessee during the second round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge on Tuesday, beginning at 11:30 a.m. MT/10:30 a.m. PT on hole No. 1. A live scoring link will be available on GoAztecs.com throughout the tournament.
