San Diego State track and field alumna Shanieka Thomas finished in a tie for 13th in the triple jump at the Rio Olympics Saturday morning in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The three-time NCAA champion missed qualifying for Sunday's final flight by just one place and 2 ½ inches (0.06 meters).
Thomas jumped 45 feet, 9 ¼ inches (13.95m) in her first two attempts, before posting her best mark of 46-00.00 (14.02m) in her final try. She tied with Germany's Jenny Elbe for 13th.
Thomas finished her SDSU career in 2014 as a three-time NCAA triple jump champion (2013-14 outdoor, 2014 indoor) and a two-time runner-up finisher (2012 outdoor, 2013 indoor). She was a seven-time USTFCCCA All-American and nine-time MW champion.
Whitney Ashley starts her Olympics Monday in the discus throw at either 8:30 p.m. BRT (4:30 p.m. PT) with the "A" flight or 9:50 p.m. BRT (5:50 p.m. PT) with the "B" side. The discus final is slated for 11:20 a.m. BRT (7:20 a.m. PT) on Tuesday. She enters the competition ranked in a tie for 11th in the world with a mark of 212-00 (64.62m).
Ashley won a 2012 NCAA title in the discus throw while at San Diego State, while also being named a four-time USTFCCCA All-American and a five-time MW champion.
