SAN DIEGO - San Diego State volleyball incoming freshman Ashlynn Dunbar was recently named the 2015-16 Galveston County (Texas) Girls Athlete of the Year. A graduate of Clear Falls High in League City, Texas, Dunbar is set to step foot on campus and be ready to compete this fall.
Dunbar is coming off a senior volleyball season that started slow due to injury, but she returned for district action. After returning to her outside hitter position once healthy, Dunbar moved to setter where she helped Clear Falls reach the second round of the playoffs. When it was all said and done, Dunbar recorded 330 kills, 35 aces, 51 blocks, 217 digs and 219 assists, according to The Galveston County Daily News.
Prior to her senior campaign, Dunbar, a district co-offensive player of the year, led the Knights to the 2014 state final and was named to the all-state tournament team. She will come to Montezuma Mesa as a four-time all-conference and all-state selection.
Additionally, Dunbar was named a Prep Volleyball Top 50 Senior Ace. As a member of Absolute Volleyball Academy, her team won the 2015 Junior National 17 Open Division championship and she was named an All-American.
Once she completed her Clear Falls volleyball season, Dunbar moved to the other hardwood to play basketball where she led the Knights to a 14-0 start and the second round of the playoffs. For the year, she averaged 15.6 points, 9.1 rebounds, 2.3 blocked shots and 2.0 steals, according to The Galveston County Daily News.
Dunbar would not let her high school athletic career end there as she switched gears once again and competed in track and field, medaling on two different occasions in the long jump before making the move to the discus throw. In her new event, she again, medaled twice and then earned gold to become the District 24-6A champion.
With her next move set for America's Finest City, Dunbar will bring four years of varsity experience in volleyball, basketball and track and field to the Aztecs. Dunbar will be one of seven new additions to the 2016 San Diego State program, which will get its season underway on Aug. 26 vs. Marist on Aztec Court.
