SAN DIEGO, Calif. - San Diego State Head Volleyball Coach Deitre-Collins Parker is one of 25 past recipients of the Honda Cup who will be in attendance and recognized during Monday's telecast of the annual award presentation. The Collegiate Women's Sports Awards will be celebrating 40 years of honoring the top female collegiate athletes in the country.
The ceremony is being held at the USC Galen Center Founders Room in Los Angeles on Monday, June 27, and will be televised live on the CBS Sports Network beginning at 6:00 p.m. (PT).
The Honda Cup (formerly the Broderick Cup) has been awarded to the country's top collegiate female athlete each year since 1977. Honda Sports Awards are presented to the top female college athletes in 12 Division I sports. From that group one is selected to receive the Honda Cup, symbolic of the top collegiate woman athlete.
As a collegian, Collins-Parker led the University of Hawai'i to consecutive national titles and a 110-5 record in her final three seasons. She was a staring middle blocker of the 1988 U.S. Olympic team and as a member of the U.S. national team also picked up bronze medals at the Goodwill and Pan American Games.
Collins-Parker became the first volleyball player to be awarded the Honda Cup, given to the nation's best collegiate female athlete in all sports, when she captured the honor in 1983. She was named the 1983 AVCA and Volleyball Magazine National Player of the Year and was a two-time winner of the Honda (formerly Broderick) Sports Award for volleyball (1983 and 1984).
Collins-Parker concluded her 20th season as a collegiate head coach last fall that has seen her lead teams at UNLV, Cornell and San Diego State. She is the recipient of the NCAA Silver Anniversary Award, is an AVCA Hall of Fame member, and serves on the AVCA Board of Directors.
In addition the to the 12 Honda Sports Award winners vying to be named the Honda Cup winner, Monday evening's broadcast will also feature the presentation of the Honda Inspiration award, the Honda Division II Player of the Year and the Honda Division III Player of the Year.
Among other past winners who will be in attendance at Monday's ceremony are Cheryl Miller (basketball), Jackie Joyner-Kersee (track), Mia Hamm (soccer), Misty May (volleyball) and last year's winner Missy Franklin (swimming).
The Collegiate Women Sports Awards has honored the nation's top NCAA women athletes for 37 years, recognizing superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service. Since commencing its sponsorship in 1986, Honda has provided more than $2.8 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women's athletics programs at the institutions.
