SAN DIEGO - San Diego State women's soccer defender Ashley Hauke is a nominee for the 2016 NCAA Woman of the Year award, the NCAA announced today. The nomination comes a month after the San Diego native participated in commencement ceremonies.
Hauke is one of 517 nominees, which is the most in the history of the Woman of the Year program, one of 231 at the Division I level, and one of seven from the Mountain West. The 26th annual award features four pillars: academics, athletics, service and leadership.
To be eligible for the award, the nominee must have completed her eligibility in her primary sport by the end of the 2015-16 season and received her undergraduate degree no later than the summer 2016 term. She must also have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.50 on a 4.00 scale.
A graduate of Rancho Bernardo High School, Hauke earned her degree in speech, language and hearing sciences, while leading the Aztecs to four straight Mountain West regular-season championships, three MW tournament titles and three NCAA tournament appearances.
Hauke was a part of the winningest senior class in program history as the group won 64 games, including a school-record 21 in 2012. That season was Hauke's first on campus and she helped SDSU reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament, post the top winning percentage in the country (.896; 21-2-1) and earn a national ranking as high as No. 3 before finishing at No. 7.
Individually, Hauke was a four-time Mountain West all-academic team selection, a two-time conference all-tournament team choice and a 2015 honorable mention performer.
The winner will be announced at an awards dinner on Sunday, Oct. 16, in Indianapolis, Indiana.
