SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State rowing team have had three members tabbed as a Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) National-Scholar Athletes. Lauren Allen, Julia Brockherde and Vera Brockherde each earned the award.
Allen is a first-time recipient of the national award and is a biology major. The Omaha, Neb., native is a four-time SDSU scholar athlete. Allen rowed in the second seat of the second eight boat this season.
This year's honor is the third consecutive for Julia Brockherde who is also an eight-time SDSU scholar athlete. The Duisburg, Germany native is a foods and nutrition major at San Diego State. The senior rowed in both the first and second eight boats this year.
Vera Brockherde, sister of Julia, was named to the list for the second-straight year. The Aztec senior is also an eight-time SDSU scholar athlete and at this year's awards banquet was named a Malik Award recipient at San Diego State. The Malik award is presented to student-athletes who achieved the highest GPA's in a semester. The German native is a health science major at SDSU. Vera Brockherde was a member of both the second eight and varsity four crews this season.
To be eligible for the CRCA award, the student-athlete must be in her second, third or fourth year of eligibility, rowed in her institution's NCAA eligible boat(s) for a minimum of 75 percent of the current spring races or racing in a regional conference event, met all eligibility rules as defined by her institution and has held a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher for her career.
