The San Diego State softball team defeated New Mexico, 2-1, to claim the weekend series Saturday at Lobo Field in Albuquerque, N.M. The Aztecs improved to 28-20 overall and 10-10 in Mountain West play with their third straight victory, while the Lobos dropped to 22-24 and 7-12.

UNM got in the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first inning when Mariah Rimmer reached on a two-out infield single and scored on a double to left-center field by Jasmine Casados.

SDSU answered in the top of the third as junior Sam Vlot (Chowchilla, Calif.) scored on a single by sophomore Zaria Meshack (Vallejo, Calif.). Senior Samantha Camello (Temecula, Calif.) followed with a double down the right-field line before senior Leia Ruiz's (Chino, Calif.) sacrifice fly to left field plated Meshack with the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run.

New Mexico threatened in the sixth, getting two on base with one out. San Diego State sophomore pitcher Alex Formby (Orange, Calif.), however, got out of the jam by getting Karissa Haleman to ground to freshman Molly Sturdivant (Santa Ana, Calif.) at third base. Sturdivant touched third to get Rimmer out and then threw to Vlot at first base to complete the double play.

Formby (11-9) tossed a perfect seventh inning to finish with the complete game win. For the game, the right-hander allowed one run on six hits and a walk over seven innings, striking out one.

A night after setting a school record with 28 hits, including three players with four or more hits, the Aztecs had four today in the win. Meshack was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run to pace SDSU, while Ruiz also singled and had an RBI. Camello and junior Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) had San Diego State's other two hits, while Vlot walked and scored a run.

The Aztecs look to complete the sweep of the Lobos at noon MT Sunday.
