The San Diego State softball team set six school records in a 23-4, five-inning victory at New Mexico Friday night in Albuquerque, N.M. The Aztecs (27-20, 9-10 MW) finished with school records in runs (23), hits (28), RBIs (23) and scoring margin (19), and senior Samantha Camello (Temecula, Calif.) added two individual records.

Camello was 6-for-6 with a double, four runs and three RBIs. The six hits were a school record, a Mountain West record, the most in the country this year, tied for the fifth most in NCAA history and tied for the third most in a regulation game in NCAA history. Her four runs also matched a school and MW record.

SDSU's 28 hits and 23 RBIs also set a MW record, while the 23 runs were second most in the 17-year history of the league.

San Diego State finished the game 28-for-41 (.683) and walked three times, raising its team batting average from .293 to .306. The Aztecs also hit a remarkable .686 (24-for-35) with runners on base and .690 (20-for-29) with runners in scoring position.

Two other SDSU players - senior Leia Ruiz (Chino, Calif.) and junior Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) - had four hits apiece. Ruiz was 4-for-6 with two RBIs and three runs, while Cable was 4-for-4 with a double, four RBIs and three runs.

Freshman Molly Sturdivant (Santa Ana, Calif.) and junior Jaylene Ignacio (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino HS) each went 3-for-4 as Sturdivant doubled, walked, drove in three runs and scored three times and Ignacio had four RBIs and two runs.

Junior Frankie Orlando (Roseville, Calif.) (2-for-2, 3 RBI, R, BB), junior Sam Vlot (Chowchilla, Calif.) (2-for-3, 2 2B, RBI, R, BB) and redshirt freshman Katie Byrd (Santee, Calif./West Hills HS) (2-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 R) also had multi-hit games, while sophomore Zaria Meshack (Vallejo, Calif.) had an RBI single and two runs.

SDSU wasted no time putting away the Lobos (22-23, 7-11 MW), scoring eight runs in the top of the first inning, one in the second, four in the third and 10 in the fourth, only failing to score in the fifth inning.

The offense was plenty for junior Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.), who allowed three runs on five hits, while striking out two over three innings. The right-hander improved to 13-8 on the season. Freshman Julie McDonald (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) yielded one run on one hit over two innings of relief, striking out one.

UNM got all four of its runs on home runs, including a solo homer by Michala Erickson and a two-run home run by Jasmine Casados in the first, and a solo homer by Jade Grey in the fourth.

Game No. 2 of the series is 1 p.m. MT Saturday.
