STANFORD, Calif. ââ'¬" The 21st-ranked San Diego State women's golf team is currently tied for 10th place with Ohio State and San José State after shooting a combined 15-over-par 299 on Thursday during the opening round of the 2016 NCAA Stanford Regional at Stanford Golf Course.
With their total, the Aztecs remain four shots in back of Colorado and Wake Forest for sixth place on the par-71, 6,269-yard track, as the top six teams and three low individuals not on those squads advance out of regional competition into the NCAA championship series, May 20-25, in Eugene, Ore.
Three SDSU players fired an opening-round 74, including Sirene Blair (South Jordan, Utah), who sits in a tie for 36th individually with fellow teammates Mila Chaves (Asunción, Paraguay) and Emma Henrikson (Malmö, Sweden).
Blair found herself lurking near the top of the leaderboard after a successful birdie conversion on the first green followed by an eagle on the par-4 fifth, where she holed out with a 6-iron shot from 160 yards away. Despite two additional birdies at No. 12 and No. 18, the Aztec junior was unable to maintain a lofty perch; however, as two bogeys and two doubles after derailed her momentum.
Chaves matched Blair with three birdies of her own, but also found the back nine treacherous as three bogeys stymied her progress. The SDSU sophomore opened with five pars on her first six greens; however, a double-bogey on the par-3 No. 3 put her pursuit mode early on.
Meanwhile, Henrikson, the Aztec senior who captured Mountain West women's golfer of the year honors last month, found birdies elusive on Thursday, but managed to minimize the damage by offsetting three bogeys with steady diet of 15 pars, including eight after the turn, where holes 10, 13 and 14 ranked among the six toughest of the round.
Elsewhere, sophomore Georgia Lacey (Del Mar, Calif.) finished the day in a tie for 64th after carding a 77. The Torrey Pines High alumna was cruising after notching seven consecutive pars following a birdie on the par-5, 501-yard No. 1, but had the rug pulled out from under her with back-to-back doubles on the ninth and 10th greens.
Rounding out the Aztec lineup was fellow classmate Haleigh Krause (Eugene, Ore.), who sits one stroke behind in the 75th position after posting a 78 in the opening round. The native Oregonian was just 1-over after eight holes, but an untimely triple at No. 9, which ranked as the toughest green of the opening round, proved too much to overcome.
The average individual score for round one was 75.26, with just six players finishing the opening 18 holes in red figures. Katrina Prendergast, an individual competitor from Colorado State, fired a 68 to grab a slim one-shot lead over Stanford's Mariah Stackhouse and Jakeishya Le of UC Riverside, who both carded a 69, while Pepperdine's Patricia Wong, Carolyn Markley of Michigan State and Texas Tech's Mami Yamamoto are tied for fourth at 1-under.
As a team, USC (+3) sits atop the standings, while Virginia (+4) occupies the second spot, followed closely by host Stanford (+5), Texas Tech (+7) and Michigan State (+7).
The Stanford Regional continues on Friday when SDSU tees off alongside Ohio State and San José State for second-round action, beginning at 7:30 a.m. PT on hole No. 10.
