EUGENE, Ore. ââ'¬" San Diego State men's golf junior Nahum Mendoza III (San Diego, Calif.) finished in a tie for 26th place on the individual leaderboard Monday at the 2016 NCAA Championships after shooting a 7-over-par 77 during the fourth and final round of stroke play at Eugene Country Club.
With his score, Mendoza, the reigning Mountain West Player of the Year, completed the tournament at 7-over 287 on the par-70, 7,014-yard track, recording the program's lowest 72-hole total in the NCAA Championships. The Francis Parker High product earned a spot as an individual competitor in the fourth round after completing day three as one of the top nine players from a non-advancing school.
As a team, the Aztecs were eliminated from the final 18 holes of medal play after landing in the 25th position on Sunday, five strokes out of the requisite top-15 finish.
Despite three bogeys on the front nine, Mendoza found himself just 1-over for the day thanks to an eagle on the par-4, 349-yard eighth green, where he made birdie in each of his three previous rounds. The two-time all-conference selection followed with a par on No. 9; however, an untimely double-bogey at the 10th derailed his momentum.
Mendoza notched four pars against one bogey on his ensuing five holes, but a costly triple-bogey on the par-3 16th hastened his drop into an 11-way logjam for 26th, where he finished 12 strokes behind the NCAA individual champion Aaron Wise of host Oregon (-5), who maintained his third-round leader after carding a 71 on Monday. USC's Rico Hoey (-3) climbed two places into the runner-up spot, while Matthias Schwab of Vanderbilt and Jon Rahm of Arizona State tied for third at 1-under.
In the team standings, Texas, Illinois, LSU, USC, Vanderbilt, Oregon, South Carolina and Oklahoma clinched the top-eight spots, respectively, and will open the match-play phase of the tournament on Tuesday.
Mendoza will compete for the U.S. squad next month at the prestigious Arnold Palmer Cup, June 24-26 in Formby, England.
