LAWRENCE, Kan. - Ashley Henderson finished second in the 100-meter dash to qualify for the NCAA Championships for the San Diego State track and field team Friday at the NCAA West Prelims in Lawrence, Kan.
Due to inclement weather on Thursday, most running events canceled its prelims and all were contested as a quarterfinal only with the heat winner and next six-fastest times advancing to Eugene. Henderson clocked a time of 11.30 seconds to win her heat and finish second overall out of 48 entrants in just the second running event of the meet. Henderson only trailed Oregon's Hannah Cunliffe, who ran a time of 11.13 with the help of a 3.0-mph tailwind in a separate heat.
Simone Glenn just missed advancing in the 100 as well, taking 17th with a wind-aided time of 11.56, while Starlynn Singleton came in 43rd in 12.01.
Madison Gipson, who won the 400-meter hurdles at the MW Championships two weeks ago, came in 27th in the same event today in a time of 59.68. Ellison Grove, who yesterday was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 Team, was 33rd in the 800 in 2:10.68.
In the pole vault, the Aztec trio of Bonnie Draxler (13-00.25 (3.97m)), Marissa Berry (13-00.25 (3.97m)) and Karen Snapper (12-06.25 (3.82m)) tied for 23rd, 36th and 39th, respectively.
The discus throw, meanwhile, was not finished and flight three will start at 9 a.m. CT (7 a.m. PT) Saturday. SDSU will also be in action at 10 a.m. CT (8 a.m. PT) with the 4x100 relay, 11:30 a.m. CT (9:30 a.m. PT) with the 100 hurdles, and 12:30 p.m. CT (10:30 a.m. PT) with the 200, triple jump and shot put.
