SAN DIEGO - San Diego State senior shortstop Samantha Camello (Temecula, Calif.) has been named a 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-American, the College Sports Information Directors or America (CoSIDA) announced today. Camello was selected to the second team.
Camello is the first Aztec softball player to ever be named a CoSIDA Academic All-America pick and the first SDSU athlete in any sport since volleyball player Andrea Hannasch was a second-team selection in 2012. Camello is the 20th Academic All-America honoree in San Diego State history (all sports).
Camello hit .359 overall with 13 doubles, two triples, two homers, 25 RBIs, 32 runs, 12 walks, five stolen bases, a .486 slugging percentage and a .400 on-base percentage en route to earning first-team all-Mountain West accolades. She led the Aztecs in at-bats (181), runs (32), hits (65), doubles (13) and triples (2), with the 65 hits ranking as the ninth most in SDSU single-season history.
Earlier this month Camello was named to the 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 First Team. She has 3.98 cumulative GPA, tied for the highest mark on the second team, while majoring in psychology.
San Diego State finished 2016 with a 30-22 record, tying for third in league play with a 12-12 mark, but missing the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2007. It marked the 11th consecutive season that the Aztecs posted 30 wins.
