ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Two San Diego State baseball players have been named to the 2016 Mountain West all-conference second team. That twosome includes second baseman Justin Wylie and left-handed pitcher Dominic Purpura.
Wylie started all 30 conference games at second base for the Aztecs, compiling a .341 batting average in those contests. He finished with seven doubles and 18 RBI while leading the Aztecs with 14 walks and six stolen bases.
The sophomore finished 16th or higher in seven offensive categories in conference contests including second in stolen bases and ninth in both hits and walks. Overall the Aztec second baseman is batting .291 with 11 doubles, 31 RBI and 39 runs scored.
Purpura finals conference statistics included a record of 3-2 with a 3.30 earned run average with the latter ranking fourth in the final league stats. Six of his eight appearances in Mountain West action were starts and he tossed complete game victories in each of his final two league outings.
The junior lefty comes into the week with an overall record of 4-2 with a 3.18 earned run average. In his most recent three starts, all in Mountain West contests, he recorded victories while allowing only four earned runs over 26 innings for a 1.38 ERA.
The Aztecs are in Albuquerque, N.M., this week for the annual Mountain West Tournament being hosted by the University of New Mexico. SDSU opens tourney play today (May 25) at 11:00 a.m. against San Jose State.
