Aztecs Ready for NCAA West Prelims this Weekend
The San Diego State track and field team continues its championship season this weekend (May 26-28) in Lawrence, Kan., at the NCAA Preliminary Rounds. The meet, which will be hosted by the University of Kansas, features the top-48 declared athletes in each individual event in the west region and the top-24 relay teams. The top-12 finishers in each event of the west region will advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., from June 8-11.
Thirteen Aztecs qualified for this weekend's meet, the most by SDSU since the NCAA implemented the new region system (west and east) in 2010, with five in multiple events - Ashley Henderson and Simone Glenn in the 100-meter dash, the 200 and the 4x100, Rachel Alesi in the shot put and the discus throw, Micha Auzenne in the 100 hurdles and 4x100, and Starlynn Singleton in the 100 and 4x100. Others in for San Diego State include Bonnie Draxler, Karen Snapper and Marissa Berry in the pole vault, Alexa Evans in the discus, Madison Gipson in the 400 hurdles, Je'Neal Ainsworth in the triple jump, Sierra Brabham-Lawrence in the 100 hurdles and Ellison Grove in the 800.
While none of the current Aztecs have qualified for the NCAA Championships in Eugene before, five athletes have competed in the NCAA West Prelims in past years. Auzenne has the most experience after taking 26th in the 100 hurdles and 46th in the 100 last year, and 35th in the 100 hurdles while at Arizona State in 2014. Snapper has also competed in the pole vault at each of the past two NCAA prelim meets. Glenn, meanwhile, was 20th in the 200 and 44th in the 100 last year, Evans came in 15th in the discus and Draxler competed in the pole vault.
KUAthletics.com will have a webcast throughout the weekend at http://kuathletics.com/watch/ which will start at 4:25 p.m. CT Thursday, 4:55 p.m. CT Friday and 5:55 p.m. CT Saturday, while live results will be available at GoAztecs.com.
