Complete Release and Season Statistics
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- San Diego State and San Jose State will square off in the second game of their weekend series this evening at 6:00 p.m. at Municipal Stadium in San Jose.
The Aztecs did what they needed to do and got the result they desired on Friday. Their 5-0 win over the Spartans coupled with Air Force's loss to New Mexico means SDSU now finds itself just one game out of fifth place in the conference standings. A finish higher that sixth would mean avoiding the play-in game at next week's Mountain West Tournament.
Dominic Purpura's six-hit shutout of the Spartans was the second consecutive complete-game effort by the junior left-hander as San Jose State lost for the fourth straight time and finds itself with a record of 16-37 overall and 6-21 in the Mountain West.
The loss also means SJSU will finish in seventh place and be the visitor in next week's tourney play-in game against either the Aztecs or Air Force.
San Jose State is expected to send sophomore right-hander Hilario Tovar (2-4, 6.32) to the mound to start tonight's contest against SDSU.
SDSU, meanwhile, will utilize junior lefty Brett Seeburger (1-2, 4.87) as tonight's starting pitcher.
With a pair of hits in last night's contest, second baseman Justin Wylie improved his batting average on conference play to .348. Tyler Adkison added three hits to his season total and is now at .324 in Mountain West action.
San Diego State and San Jose State will wrap up their three-game series and regular-season play with a contest on Saturday, May 21, at 1:00 p.m. at Municipal Stadium.
