SACRAMENTO, Calif. - On Saturday, the San Diego State rowing team concluded its season at the American Athletic Conference Championship on Lake Natoma. The Aztecs placed fifth in overall team standings at the regatta which was hosted by Sacramento State. In addition, two SDSU rowers claimed spots on the all-league team.
The first race of the day came at 11:10 a.m. and proved to be the best finish for SDSU. The top three finishers crossed nearly at the same time, with only tenths of a second separating them. The third varsity fours faced off with Temple placing first with a time of 8 minutes, 5.1 seconds. San Diego State came in second (8:05.6) followed by Sacramento State (8:05.8), UCF (8:06.9), Tulsa (8:23.9) and UConn (8:27.4).
At 11:20 a.m. the second varsity fours took to the water. Tulsa finished first (7:50.1) followed by Sacramento State (7:53.4), UCF (7:59.3), Temple (8:05.3), UConn (8:10.2) and SDSU (8:11.0).
The third varsity eight crews were the next up at 11:30 a.m. with Temple taking the top spot (7:09.3). Tulsa crossed in the second position (7:14.4) followed by UCF (7:16.8), UConn (7:25.7) and the Aztecs (7:39.7).
At 11:40 a.m. the varsity four boats faced off with UCF (7:35.2) taking its first top spot of the day. Tulsa was a few seconds behind (7:39.5), followed by UConn (7:41.9), Temple (7:42.4), Sacramento State (7:48.3), SDSU (7:57.1) and SMU (8:34.4).
The second eights set off at 11:50 a.m. with UCF claiming its second first place of the day (6:50.3). Hosting Sacramento State finished second (6:58.2) followed by Tulsa (7:01.1), SDSU (7:03.3), Temple (7:04.3), UConn (7:08.9) and SMU (7:33.1).
The final race of the day saw the top eights face off at noon. Eventual overall winner, UCF, took its third and final title of the day (6:40.7). Tulsa crossed next (6:49.2) followed by Temple (6:54.0), SDSU (6:55.4), Sacramento State (6:56.1), UConn (7:01.0) and SMU (7:08.9).
The fifth-place team finish is a one-spot improvement from last season's sixth place spot. In addition, two Aztecs were named to the all-league team. Stephanie Schulman, the coxswain of the top eight, claimed a spot on the all-conference first team. Christa Carrillo, who rowed in the third seat of the varsity eight, nabbed a second team honor.
"The whole team performed well in just our second year in the conference, moving up a place from last year and challenging for third overall," said head coach Bill Zack. "The first eight had a really strong last 500-meters and almost went past Temple. The second eight finally met their potential and placed a well-earned fourth. It was great seeing the third four standing on the stage with their silver medals. Team co-captain, senior Stephanie Schulman, really deserved to be on the all-conference first team. Her drive and spirit set the tone for how much the team improved this year. The second team selection, Christa Carrillo, epitomizes the work ethic for our top athletes. The staffs from The American, Sacramento State and the Aquatic Center did a great job of putting on the races. We are already looking forward to next year's conference championship in New Jersey."
San Diego State concludes the 2016 season with marked improvement. This year's campaign was highlighted by a varsity eight sweep at the Sacramento State triple dual weekend in March. For their efforts, the top eight was named the American Athletic Conference Boat of the Week, the first such honor for the Aztec rowing team.
