SAN DIEGO, Calif. – San Diego State and Air Force will square off for a baseball doubleheader today beginning at noon at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
The first game will be a seven-inning affair that serves as the make-up for a contest that was postponed by weather when SDSU visited Colorado Springs in mid-March. The Falcons will act as home team in that game.
The second contest will start approximately 30 minute after the conclusion of the opener and will be the regular nine-inning game as part of the scheduled weekend series between the teams.
After Friday's 4-2 Aztec win, Air Force enters today's twin bill with a record of 26-21 overall and 10-14 in the Mountain West. The Falcons have set a school record for most wins in a Division I season and currently sit in fifth place in the league standings, three games ahead of SDSU in the loss column.
The Academy is expected to start its ace, right-hander Griffin Jax (7-2, 2.08) in today's opener. Jax's earned run average leads the conference coming into the weekend.
The Falcons will turn to lefty Jacob DeVries (5-5, 5.13) to start game two this afternoon.
San Diego State comes into the day with an overall record of 15-33 and it occupies sixth place in the league with a conference mark of 7-17. Both the Aztec and Falcons immediate goal is to finish fifth or higher to avoid the play-in game at the Mountain West Tournament in two weeks.
SDSU will send redshirt freshman right-hander Harrison Pyatt (0-5, 5.61) to the mound for today's seven-inning first game and follow that up with left-hander Brett Seeburger (0-2, 5.05) in the nightcap.
The Aztecs and Falcons will conclude their weekend with a single game on Sunday, May 15, set to get underway at 1:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
