BOISE STATE 3, SDSU 2 | VIDEO REPLAY

San Diego State was held to just three hits in a 3-2 loss to Boise State in the series opener Thursday night at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs fell to 28-22 with the setback and 10-12 in Mountain West play, while the Broncos improved to 14-36 and 6-16.

BSU took the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Rebekah Cervantes homered over the left-field wall with two outs.

Boise State made it 2-0 in the third as Teauna Hughes ripped a two-out double down the left-field line to plate Izzy Serrano.

SDSU got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth when junior Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) walked and was replaced by freshman Aris Metcalfe (Compton, Calif.). Metcalfe stole second and, one batter later, moved to third on a single by junior Jaylene Ignacio (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino HS). San Diego State then performed a double steal with Ignacio stealing second and Metcalfe racing home for the Aztecs' first run of the game.

The Broncos responded with a run of their own in the fifth when a double by Hughes plated Tatiana Sorokina. BSU had runners on second and third after the double with one out before SDSU sophomore Alex Formby replaced junior Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) in the circle. Formby promptly struck out Morgan Lamb looking and got pinch-hitter Corey Hendrickson to ground out to senior shortstop Samantha Camello (Temecula, Calif.) to keep the damage to a minimum.

San Diego State mounted a comeback in the sixth when Cable tripled off the centerfielder's glove into the right-center field gap and later scored on a wild pitch to bring the Aztecs within a run at 3-2.

SDSU tried one more time for the tying run in the bottom of the seventh as junior Frankie Orlando (Roseville, Calif.) led off with a walk and was replaced by redshirt freshman Katie Byrd (Santee, Calif./West Hills HS), who moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Sam Vlot (Cowchilla, Calif.). After a groundout, Byrd advanced to third on an illegal pitch and sophomore Zaria Meshack (Vallejo, Calif.) followed with an infield single, which kept Byrd at third base. Camello ripped a hard-hit ball that appeared to scoot through the infield, but Boise State second baseman Shaelee Pearson dove to her left and just barely got Camello at first to end the game.

Cable was 1-for-1 with two walks for San Diego State, which was outhit, 8-3, in the game. Ignacio and Meshack also singled for the Aztecs, while senior Stefania Aradillas (Mexico City) and Orlando reached via walk.

Romero (13-9) took the loss after allowing three runs on eight hits and a walk over 4 1/3 innings, while striking out two. Formby pitched a perfect 2 2/3 innings of relief, recording two strikeouts.

Game No. 2 of the series is set for 6 p.m. PT Friday.
