SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State rowing team will seat off for the American Athletic Conference Championship which is set for Saturday, May 14. The Aztecs will enter all six events at the one-day regatta. SDSU will return to the Sacramento State Aquatic Center on Lake Natoma for Saturday's races.
The first event at the conference event will come at 11:10 a.m. with the third varsity fours facing off. The second varsity fours will follow at 11:20 a.m. At 11:30 a.m. the third varsity eights will take to the water followed by the varsity fours at 11:40 a.m. The second varsity eights will set off at 11:50 a.m. followed by the final race of the day, the varsity eights, at noon. The awards ceremony will wrap the day's events and is set to get underway at 12:50 p.m.
The regatta will be hosted by Sacramento State on Lake Natoma. This will be San Diego State's third trip to the race site this season. The Aztecs will look to replicate the success they have found on the lake for Saturday's races. In March, SDSU swept all varsity eight races over three dual races which resulted in the top eight being awarded with the American's Boat of the Week honor.
In addition to the achievements during the Sacramento State triple dual weekend, SDSU medaled in all races entered during the WIRA Championships on April 30-May 1. At the regatta the varsity eight finished second to last season's IRA National Champion, the Stanford Lightweight crew. Overall, the Aztecs finished with two silver medals and two bronze at the event.
For their efforts, Christa Carrillo, the three seat, and coxswain Stephanie Schulman of the varsity eight were named to the all-WIRA First Team. Hannah Norris, who rowed in the stroke position of the second varsity 'A' crew, was named to the all-WIRA Second Team along with Katie McKibbin who rowed in the bow position in the varsity four boat.
Saturday's event will be livestreamed in its entirety on The American Digital Network. Complete coverage of the regatta can be found on the championship central page.
