FRESNO, Calif. - San Diego State and Fresno State will pay the rubber game of their weekend series with a contest this afternoon set to get underway at 1:05 p.m. at Beiden Field in Fresno.
San Diego State captured Friday night's contest by the score of 4-2 while the Bulldogs won Saturday evening's game, 1-0, in 10 innings.
FSU enters this afternoon's affair with a record of 31-17 overall and 18-8 in the Mountain West. It remains in second place in the conference standings, two games behind league New Mexico.
SDSU comes into today's series finale with an overall mark of 14-31. The Aztecs' record of 6-15 in Mountain West play places them sixth in the league, three games behind Air Force.
The Aztecs enter today's action two-and-a-half games behind Air Force, which currently sits in fifth place. SDSU remains within reach of the fifth spot as it tries to avoid the play-in game for the conference tournament between the sixth and seventh-place squads. A win today in Fresno would make next weekend's series vs. the Falcons even more critical.
Fresno State is expected to start right-hander Edgar Gonzalez (2-1, 3.49) on the mound this afternoon.
SDSU, meanwhile, has yet to confirm a starting hurler but will most likely start either redshirt freshman Harrison Pyatt (0-5, 5.61) or junior Cody Thompson (2-7, 6.40).
Alan Trejo's .317 batting average continues to lead the SDSU offense as does his 58 hits and 29 runs batted in.
Following today's game, San Diego State will return home and prepare for the visit of Air Force next weekend. There will be a total of five games decided between the teams beginning on Friday, May 13, with the completion of a game suspended in Colorado Springs in mid-March.
Following completion of that contest, the teams will play a make-up of a game that was postponed during SDSU's visit to the Academy as well. The Aztecs and Falcons will then play a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday as part of the scheduled three-game weekend series.
