SAN DIEGO, Calif. - San Diego State will resume Mountain West action when it opens a three-game series this evening against Fresno State at 6:05 p.m. at the Bulldogs' Beiden Field.
FSU enters the weekend with a record of 30-16 overall and 17-7 in conference play. The Bulldogs currently sit in second place in the Mountain West standings, two games behind league leader New Mexico.
Fresno State's top offensive players include outfielder Brody Russell (.415, 15 2B, 35 RBI) and first baseman Aaron Arruda (.331, 8 HR, 33 RBI).
The Bulldogs are expected to send lefthander Ricky Tyler Thomas (7-3, 2.21) to the mound to open tonight's contest. Thomas' earned run average is the best in the conference heading to tonight's action.
Junior left-hander Dominic Purpura (1-2, 4.38) will get the pitching start for SDSU this evening. It will mark his third start in SDSU's last four contest after he tossed five innings last Saturday vs. Nevada and an inning in Tuesday''s win over No.17 Cal State Fullerton.
The Aztecs' top batting average (.322) continues to be held by shortstop Alan Trejo, who leads the club in hits and RBI. He had a pair of sacrifice flies vs. CSU Fullerton on Tuesday to tie the SDSU record for most in a game.
Sophomore center fielder Denz'l Chapman has injected a spark into the Aztec offense after making his first start of the season in last Sunday's game vs. Nevada. In his two starts, including Tuesday's win over CSU Fullerton, Chapman has gone 4-for-8 with a triple, RBI and two runs scored.
San Diego State and Fresno State will continue their weekend series on Saturday, May 7, with as contest scheduled to begin at 6:05 p.m. in Fresno.
