SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Andrew Brown's single to left field drove home teammate Tyler Adkison with the winning run in the bottom of the 12th inning as San Diego State defeated No. 20 Long Beach State, 6-5, Tuesday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
The loss ended a three-game skid for the Aztecs, who saw their record move to 7-19 on the season. Long Beach State, meanwhile had its season ledger drop to 17-11.
SDSU had to come from behind twice to erase two-run and three-run deficits before the contest moved to extra frames.
In the bottom of the 12th, Adkison led off with triple to right center field. After Jordan Verdon was hit by pitch, Brown delivered the game-winning hit.
The Aztecs had a chance to win it an inning earlier as they loaded the bases with one out. LBSU reliever Lucas Jacobsen, however, struck out the next two batters to escape the jam. The sophomore left-hander wasn't as fortunate in the 12th as SDSU pinned him with the loss to see his record drop to 0-1.
Junior lefty Jacob Erickson, who had come in with two on and two out in the top of the 11th, took credit for the win to even his record at 3-3. Erickson retired all four batters he faced over the final 1.1 innings.
Long Beach State opened the scoring with single runs in both the second and third frames to go up 2-0. SDSU responded by tying the contest in the bottom of the third with those runs coming on a bases-loaded walk to Chase Calabuig and an RBI single to left by Spencer Thornton.
The tie score lasted just two innings as the visitors got a three-run home run from first baseman Daniel Jackson in the top of the fifth to take a 5-2 lead.
But once again the Aztecs had an immediate response, tying the game at 5-5 with three runs of their own in the bottom of the same inning. Those markers came courtesy of a two-run triple by Calabuig that plated Justin Wylie and David Hensley, who had reached via a walk and single respectively. After Thornton walked, Calabuig scored when an errant pickoff attempt to first sailed by the bag for an error on LBSU pitcher Ty Provencher.
Thornton was the lone Aztec with more than one hit on the night as he finished with three singles and an RBI. Calabuig had the triple and three RBI while Wylie and Hensley scored two runs apiece.
San Diego state will now get set to resume Mountain West play when it hosts a three-game series against UNLV that gets underway on Friday, April 8, at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
