Rowing's Novice Eight Wins Heat To Advance at WIRAs

April 30, 2016

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The San Diego State rowing team competed in two of the four races scheduled on Saturday and took first and second place. The Aztecs finished in the second spot during the varsity four event while they claimed the top spot in the novice eight race. The second half of the scheduled races were pushed to Sunday due to high winds.

In the first showdown of the day, SDSU faced off against Sacramento State and two Saint Mary's boats. The hosting Hornets crossed the finish line first with a time of 8 minutes, 7.4 seconds. SDSU came in second (8:17.2) followed by the Gaels' ‘B' boat (8:37.4) and the Saint Mary's ‘A' crew (8:38.5).

"The four was able to do their race for lanes and placed second, thus moving to lane two for tomorrow's final at 10:50 a.m.," said head coach Bill Zack. "It was good for them to do the race for lanes as it is their first regatta in that lineup. We hope in calmer conditions tomorrow to challenge Sacramento State for the gold medals."

At 11:40 a.m., SDSU took on five schools and came away with the win in the novice eight race. The Aztecs clocked a time of 7:23.9 followed by UCSB ‘A' (7:35.4), Seattle University (7:52.4), Humboldt State (8:03.7), UCSB ‘C' (8:10.1) and California (8:51.5).

"The novice eight was one of the last races before the regatta was called off for the day," said Zack. "They won their heat easily and convincingly. Coxswain Ariel Handler was very good in handling the crosswind and choppy water; it is hard to steer well in those conditions. It looks like the Aztecs, Stanford lightweights and Sacramento State will be fighting it out for the medals at 11:10 a.m. on Sunday."

The second eight and varsity eight races were postponed until Sunday due to the windy weather. The two events will be changed to finals only. The second eight race is scheduled for 12:10 p.m. while the varsity eight will get underway at 1:30 p.m.
